Raksha Bandhan is the festival where the sister ties Rakhi (thread of protection) to her brother. Brother must take care of sister; this is his dharma and duty from birth. So, sister has protection of her brother right from birth. When sister wants to give protection to her brother, she ties Raksha (thread of protection) that gives kavach (armour) to her brother.
Raksha Bandhan is on the day of full moon (Poornima). Moon gives colling effect. Thus, rays of the moon calm the feelings of the brother who otherwise would become emotionally charged and aggressive and would say to his sister that, “I will destroy all those harassing you”.
Raksha Bandhan is in the month of Shravan. The plantary alignment in Shravan is such that all positive things multiply 10-fold. Constant energy is flowing from Mount Kailash.
During Raksha Bandhan, 5 things are essential:
1. Kanku (vermillion) – to apply on forehead of the brother. This symbolizes bravery.
2. Akshad (raw rice) – to apply on forehead for purity.
3. Diya (Lamp)– As witness for God on the occasion of this pious thought or protection.
4. Rakhi (protective thread)- to tie on the hand.
5. Prasad – To give offering for this armour.
These 5 things are essential along with right thought.
