Rama: Because opposite of Rama is mara which means to die. The opposite of ‘die’ is life. Rama means: to give life. Thus he is called Rama.
Lakshman: means laksh (target) and mann means mind. In the mind of Lakshman, the focus was always Rama. Thus, his life was dedicated to Rama and he could be brought back to life from death.
Sita: means si (shishu- child) and ta (taavdi – vessel made from earth clay after heating in the fire). Sita was born from earth and gave agni pariksha (fire test) and came out stronger. Ravana: This is the name given by Lord Shiv. Ra is the short form of raag (music), van is short form of veena (a stringed musical instrument). Ravana got this name after playing music on veena and pleasing Lord Shiv.
