Sui – means self, cide – to kill
Suicide is called as atma hatya (આત્મ હત્યા – killing of the soul). It is not called sharir hayta (શરીર હત્યા – killing of the body). Because when you kill yourself, you cause maximum harm to your soul rather than body. The body anyways is not you. So by killing yourself, you are not doing anything to the body but to your soul. You are harming your soul. Every soul (jiva-atma) has a journey to merge in divine (param-atma). By committing suicide, you regress your journey manifold and take it backwards. The suffering that you had in your body before suicide will be aggravated 100 fold after your suicide. Your suffering does not end with suicide. You actually suffer in “hell” and you yearn to again have a human body which may not come to you for several years. Suicide is not the end, it is the beginning of your hellish life.
Suicide gets glorified by people as the person who committed suicide is not there to tell you how bad it is. Thus people look at suicide as an ego satisfying trip. It is such a trip that instead of atma darshan (vision of the soul), you land up doing atma hatya (killing of the soul).
