Geet means song of the lord. A means ‘aum’. Geet + A is called Gita. Gita is the song sung by lord Krishna on the battle field of Kurukshetra when be explains Arjuna about life and its secrets.
Gita is basically about life, god, ways to the lord, laws of the lord and how to overcome the shackles of karma. Gita is about not getting attached to what is happening but how to remain detached to what is happening, Gita is divided into 18 chapters and contains about a 1000 shloks. First 2 chapters deal with temptations and jewels that one will come across on the path to the lord. Next 5 chapters are on karma yog, next 3 on jnana yog, next 2 chapters are on bhakti yog, next chapter is on kriya yog, next 3 chapter are on raj yoga and last chapter is summation which states that there is no single path. Path to the lord is an amalgamation of all paths and the single way of achieving that is only to surrender. No matter which path you are inclined towards, ultimately it is only based on your state of mind and is based on how much you are able to forget yourself, how much you can give up your ‘I’, how much you can absolve yourself of yourself. The essence of gita is to forget ‘ee’ and accept ‘a’. The one who gave essence of gita in modern world is Maharishi Raman. He completely forgot his ‘I’.
